“just let people do what they WAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaant”
i promise that no matter how much i talk about how fucking awful and harmful and destructive the things you want to write and draw are, i cannot actually stop you from making the world’s biggest ass of yourself.
people reacting to what you have made is a natural consequence and inescapable. you brought that shit on your self. stop trying to blame the people who are doing everything they can to avoid your stupid shit for your own pathetic failures
this literally would not be happening to you people if you could just fucking examine What You Want and realize that it’s fucking bad.
you want the freedom to be homophobic, transphobic, racist pedophiles whenever you fucking feel like it with no consequences. you want to claim that you’re of vital significance to the community you’re poisoning because people are finally realizing that they don’t HAVE to put up with your shit.
If slavery AUs and child porn are the hill you want to die on then go ahead and fucking die.
I do gotta say as much as I have always harped on Overwatch for same face, like, tumblr always voices that as “blizzard can’t design women” or “lazy modelers” which I don’t really think is the case, other than in casual hyperbole. I think it’s important to point out as well that there really isn’t a huge variety in their handsome male faces either, they just have the benefit of facial hair and more masked faces that sort of distract from that fact.
Yeah def, on one hand I applaud being nit picky about all this, I think it does lead to better art from the people who end up absorbing pieces of the discussion. But I also think having a better sense of what is extremely intentional/calculated, and what is sort of collateral damage of the production process leads to better critique, which leads to better art.. and so on
This, but also literally how is her face different in the short other than like lighting and game hair??? Her face in the short IS ALSO the Overwatch/Pixar Girl face??
????
This could plausibly not be the case with Brigette but they’ve said how they make the cinematics is taking the in game models and assets (maps/etc) and improving those models and different rendering etc for the purposes of animation – so it’s probably the exact same model just more detailed/render differently/different lighting/etc.
I’ve always been under the general impression that if Jyn Erso had been a man she would never have been treated the way she is. She isn’t a great speaker, she keeps to herself, she makes mistakes, she isn’t visually expressive, but these are all just character traits and there isn’t anything wrong with any of them. If she’d been a man they would have called him ‘sensitive’, but she’s a woman so she ‘doesn’t have a personality’. She borrows a line Cassian said that spoke to her and she ‘plagiarized’ him, but Captain America repeats every line anyone has ever said to him and ‘that’s how he say I Love You’. We get stuck in this pattern of “women are Adorkable or Strong Female Character Who Punches People and there’s no inbetween” and that’s not true but Jyn didn’t fit into those two categories so she was wrong in some way, and to some degree, all Star Wars heroines are.
When Leia first appeared on screens she was ‘a bitch’ and ‘needed to be taken down a few notches’
When Padme showed up she was ‘girly’ and ‘overly emotional’
When Rey came out she was ‘too perfect’ and ‘a mary sue’
And Jyn is here and she’s ‘emotionless’ and ‘makes too many mistakes’.
This feels less like women aren’t being represented accurately and more like maybe people just don’t want to see women doing anything at all on the screen.
Bodhi was quiet too. Bodhi had a difficult time expressing himself. They say he’s sensitive. It’s weird how that works.
don’t get me wrong, i’m a firm believer in the philosophy that if you don’t like something, don’t read it. if you don’t like a ship, or a setting, or another element of the story, hopefully it’s tagged properly so you can make that choice for yourself and move on. it’s not complicated and not hard and i’m not against it.
but this isn’t a sentiment that continues on when we’re talking about racism in fiction. when a story itself is blatantly or even subtly racist, it’s not a matter of “if you don’t like it you don’t have to read it”. fanfiction doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and many of the racist tropes people use are hurtful to people of color both online and in their real lives. it’s just a fact. it’s wrong and it’s disgusting and people who write things like that deserve to be called out. it’s not a nice process, but it’s not a product of “callout culture”. it’s not “drama”. it’s the safety of people of color within fandom. it’s mutually agreed that fandom should be a safe space, and that includes people of color. we’re not going to ignore racist behavior off the internet, so how can you expect us to ignore racist behavior in our supposed “safe space”?
if it upsets you, too bad. you need to reevaluate yourself and why you’re dead-set on using racist tropes in your fiction or defending the people who do. you’re willing to go out of your way to research small and inconsequential things for your stories, so why wouldn’t you go out of your way to make sure they’re not racist?
it’s disappointing to see the amount of pushback from people who absolutely refuse to consider they might be doing something wrong, but if you’re a writer in a fandom space, please consider and reconsider your content. racism in fiction comes in all shapes and sizes. and if someone says you’ve done something wrong, please just accept it and learn and move on. no one wants to have to deal with any of this. it’s not why we’re here.
I see a lot of white cis queers calling for more cops at Pride events right now. I’ve already seen them, walking through Boystown in Chicago, armed police silently watching us in their bullet proof vests. We forget that this is not comforting for a lot of the most vulnerable members of our community.
Most Pride events won’t be attacked. Honestly, as afraid as we are, most likely, this isn’t going to happen to us. Most Pride events are going to go off without anyone mass murdering us.
The thing I’ve noticed is that when cops go in expecting a fight, but don’t get one, they get bored. When cops get bored, they go looking for a fight, and they find it with people of color, and with trans/gnc people, and with sex workers.
And make no mistake, these are often the people doing the most for the queer community, the most radical, the most fired up. The most vulnerable members of our community are stuck in this place where they face a threat from both armed gunmen and cops. Bringing in more cops actually increases the likelihood that they’ll face trouble because again, these events have a 99.9% chance of not being attacked by homophobic citizens with guns, but now they have an increased likelihood of an altercation with police.
White cis queers, we have the privilege to not be bothered by this, but let’s not revel in this privilege. Don’t create a safe space for yourself at the expense of queer PoC. Reject increased police presence. Don’t trust them. Watch them. Protect our PoC, trans/gnc, sex worker community members from them. Don’t let more injustice happen so you can feel personally safe from a boogeyman.
Now, go have responsible fun at Pride. Do no harm, fight for your rights, and the rights of those below you on this unjust hierarchy.
