Freedom of Speech does not mean “don’t use these words because we don’t like them.”
BAN BOSSY ISNT A LITERAL BAN OF THE WORD BOSSY.
IT IS AN ALLITERATIVE TITLE FOR A COMPLEX CAMPAIGN AIMED AT ADDRESSING A SPECIFIC FORM OF BULLYING THAT YOUNG GIRLS EXPERIENCE.
I think at times like this it’s important to remember that laws protecting freedom of speech were made to protect the oppressed and guarantee their right to safe protest and awareness raising, and not to protect oppressors from being called out on their shit.
Freedom of speech only grants you the right to speak. It doesn’t give you the right to be listened to and certainly doesn’t grant you the right to be agreed with.
Your free speach is not worth more than anyone else’s free speech and, critically for this kind of argument, free speech doesn’t protect you from retribution if your free speech is used to harm another person (the extreme example being hate speach – which is a crime)
