Musketeers people – can anyone check this scene and confirm that Aramis appears to be wearing sort of….suspender thingamies for his giant frickin’ boot cuffs? The caps (from here) show it a little, but the scene seems to suggest it.

Also, any theories on why he wears suspenders for his breeches too?

Or is all of Aramis’ clothing constantly at the point of falling off, hence the need for buckles and straps and suspenders to keep it all on?

Yeah, I think it’s that.

yeah he is I think, you can see the straps down his legs in a couple of other scenes as well.

I assume they are attatched to the extra belt he’s wearing – the other two are part of the sword holder? which does have a name I’ve just forgotten it (which explains a lot cause when I first saw this scene I just went ‘really you need another belt? really? you’re wearing suspenders, that belt is serving no purpose’)

The braces are I think normal for the time, and belts aren’t used yet for keeping trouser up just carrying things. So I think it’s more wierd dartagnan isn’t wearing any than weird aramis is, but i could be wrong. Or, yeah, Aramis has a lot of trouble keeping his clothes on, that could be it. All things considered it’s amazig how fast he manages to get dressed in his first scene

Convention and Cosplay Updates

Other people may be interested but this is mostly for my benefit cause I keep forgetting what I’m meant to be doing when. Under a cut cause it’s quite long

Conventions I’m Attending

May Expo (almost certainly in this order)

Tony Stark (Avengers) – Black Sabbath tshirt and iron man suit glove. (or as much as I manage to make of an arm)

Will Graham (Hannibal) – prison uniform thing (I also need to acctually watch the program, mel brought a suit)

Reg Shoe (Discworld) – With a protest sign and eight cross bow bolts sticking out of my chest (sunday is may 25th…and I can reuse some les mis stuff)

Penciled in for October Expo (probably not in this order, only if the groups come together and outfits are pulled off in time, and not sure which days I can do yet)

Daniel (Interview with the Vampire) – as this group has been pushed back from may

Aramis (bbc’s The Musketeers) – standard outfit, lots of work needed

Jackson (Ripper Street) – standard outfit

Cosplays I shall do at some point

Frobisher (cloud atlas) – shirt, trousers, braces, sixsmiths waistcoat? etc (going to cheat and make his trousers for reg cause they’ll be fine for both)

Conventions I may go to

LFCC – looks doable, know some people who are going, may be working, maybe only for a day

Camcon – may be working, close to my parents

The Musketeers costumes – Cape 1/1

The official musketeer cape is a half circle cape made of six panels of leather (so much leather!) and a wide collar. It is below knee length, measured from the side of the neck and down over the shoulder. It seems longer because the front and back hang lower due to the way it is secured. The rope holding the cape on is fastened in front, usually just before the opposite arm, the excess left to hang. The ends are knotted to prevent further fraying. The collar is a one piece collar lined with more leather. There is a neck facing on the inside of the cape, curving down a couple of inches in the middle.

There is a centre seam all the way up the back, but the shoulder seams attaching the front panels are short, closed further with two brass fleur-de-lis buttons. The side panel inserts are secured only with buttons, eleven for each long edge of the side panel (twenty-two per panel). There are five more buttons on the folded front edges of the cape. This adds up to fifty-eight buttons in total for the whole cape. The buttonholes are bound with thread.

The Musketeers costumes – Athos’ Jacket 1/1

The body of Athos’ jacket is made of two front panels and two back panels with wedge-shaped flaps at the back and front (the front ones doubling as pockets; these have an extra seam running down them, they aren’t made of one piece of leather) which match those panels in width at the top. The bottom edges of these flaps are wider added up than the circumference of Athos’ hips, so they overlap a little. The waist seam is horizontal at the back, but slopes downwards from a bit below waist height at the side seams to a couple inches lower at the centre front. The right shoulder is reinforced with an extra layer of leather.

The sleeves are two-part sleeves that run down to halfway the back of Athos’ hand when the bottom edges aren’t folded back (the cuffs aren’t separate pieces sewn on). Only the top half of the sleeves are attached to the body, leaving the armpit open. On the last picture you can see a small triangular gusset added between the sleeve and the body to strengthen the place where they attach. I assume they’re also present at the back.

The edges of the collar, the bottom of the sleeve and the pocket flaps are bound with strips of leather. The wedge-shaped flaps at the bottom of the jacket are lined with more leather, and the front panels are also faced with leather at the centre front, though I’m not sure how far that continues – a bit beyond the buttons and buttonholes at least. The inside of the collar and the bottom of the sleeves are lined with linen; for the sleeves this could perhaps continue up for the whole sleeve.

The sleeves have five brass half-dome buttons and leather loops each, while the front of the jacket is closed with fourteen of the same buttons with corresponding leather-bound buttonholes. The pocket flaps have three buttons and bound buttonholes each.

I’m looking forward to making this jacket, except maybe all those buttonholes! Does anyone want me to do a post like this for the others’ jackets as well?
