“I want to make it very clear that this Captain Marvel’s name is Carol Danvers.” —Kevin FeigeI’m sure everyone has already heard that Carol is heading to the big screen in 2018. We’re all floating right now (comments I got at work when the news broke: “Look at your face!” “Are you crying?” “You haven’t stopped smiling for hours.” “Look at her face!”), and I think it’s really, really important as we celebrate to remember that now is not the time to stop pushing.
As a community, we need to not let ourselves be placated by one movie. This is the time for us to step up our game and push for more women and more diversity in superhero films instead of subsiding into acceptance. I realize that four years seems like a long wait, and it’s hard to maintain momentum over what is rapidly becoming decades, but don’t stop talking, don’t stop asking for more. Tweet @Marvel and @Disney, write letters, sign petitions, buy Ms. Marvel comics and tell your friends why you love She-Hulk, go see Wonder Woman as many times as you can.
Do not let yourself be tricked into playing the game of pitting heroines against one other. I am excited (so excited) that Captain Marvel is getting her own movie, but that excitement does not in any way lessen how much I still want a Black Widow film. Neither of these characters are intrinsically more deserving; they are not interchangeable; we do not have to choose between them. As a culture of women who are also fans, if we are owed anything, we are owed not only Captain Marvel but also Black Widow, not only Wonder Woman but also Storm.
Be visible. Keep asking. Support each other. This is not the end goal; this is only our beginning.
