So I just remembered this from Goblet of Fire:

“Bold Gryffindor, from wild moor,

Fair Ravenclaw, from glen,

Sweet Hufflepuff, from valley broad,

Shrewd Slytherin, from fen.”

I reckon this means that the founders are from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland respectively, and so they are literally bringing wizards and witches from all over Great Britain. Also, their colours are the colours associated with each country; red for England, blue for Scotland, yellow for Wales and green for Ireland.

I love this world so so much.

Yellow for Wales??

I think saint davids flag is black with a yellow cross (also daffodils? owain glyndwr’s coat of arms is red and yellow also?) but thats seems a bit of a stretch – and red would come to mind more so than yellow (the dragon on the flag, sports teams etc)

they could also be references to kingdoms that existed at the time rather than the ones that exist now? – we don’t really know exactly when hogwarts was founded and the vikings/danes could well be around at the time it was (borders between anglosaxon and danish kingdoms in what is now england fluctuate a bit but basically north east vikings, south west saxons with some smaller kingdoms, wales and irelands are both in about five kingsdoms each at this point? plus there is a viking presence in ireland at various points, I believe scotland is comparitively more united?but again depends on exact date)

(fen seems like it could also easily refer to like ‘the fens’ which are sort of north west of kings lynn while we’re at it)
