@tacticalgrandma replies to this post (eh I’m on mobile just follow the link for context)

With deep cover theories in general I find I can never adequately answer the question of what the hell he’s been doing for the last six years since overwatch fell, revenge is a bit too vague? I could see inflitrating talon being a thing he might do personally pre-fall (he could convince them he’s fed up with overwatch or that he needs…whatever Moira is supposed to be doing – incidentally I think if overwatch fires his one way of handling whatever genetic stuff is going on that might be “they left me to become this thing”. or talon don’t know who he actually is? This is possible but I’m not sure it really works, sombra and Moira do at least know him.) But needs something more to it to work as a thing he’s still doing.

But if he did that I don’t think it was particularly successful. I doubt things like widowmaker, ana’s death, mccree leaving, and the Swiss base explosion were examples of things going according to plan. In fact the only thing he’s managed to keep is talons reasonable confidence he’s working for them….which is interesting, partly cause it sort of implys they didn’t try and blow him up. The only thing an initial undercover thing seems to have done is provide him with an in to talon post-fall. Everything else seems to have gone badly wrong despite whatever ways they tried to fight talon (whether that involves someone going undercover or not)

Yeah, also I think you’re right he’s not overly concerned about killing people – he’s probably got people he’d rather not kill (I could see him balking at killing Jack without Ana’s presence, he also doesn’t seem overly concerned with actually killing Winston in recall and the museum short – if he can avoid it at least or this is plot armour who knows) and people he does actually want to kill (possibly also jack) but he’s got no issues killing people like the grunts at volskaya etc.

This is long sorry, I do think a lot of these ‘this doesn’t quite make sense’ things with Gabriel are somewhat a result of overwatch having clearly changed tact with where they are going with his character, which complicates things

Conflicting Gabriel Reyes theories:

– double agent or his involvement in talon at least started out this way. Lots of convincing people he’s ‘seen the light’ of talons way of doing things/he’s sick of overwatch/not getting credit/etc but none of that’s actually true. Or he does this under the identity of reaper and talon doesn’t know that’s also gabriel. Possibly trying to help Amelie lacroix as well. He’s trying to discover who the moles within overwatch/blackwatch are and get them out of the picture before they can do too much damage. Obviously this doesn’t work but he’s still doing exactly the same thing and still on the hunt for overwatch people who helped talon back then.

– Gabriel’s job has always included going into places and making things worse so overwatch are asked to or have an excuse to intervene – he does this as reaper (who’s been seen on battlefield for “20 years”). Again he’s still doing the same thing, he realises talon needs to be a big enough threat that the world will accept the reformation of overwatch, his attack on watchpount Gibraltar forces Winston’s hand on the recall, etc.

A healthy side of ‘becoming the mask’ in either case undercover work is hard (and he’s undercover in both senarios and has basically been doing it alone for six years) but also possibly via: to borrow from gameplay, Moira’s experiments mean killing people aliviates pain/makes him feel good in some way. Which could be the inspiration for widowmaker. Or he’s convinced talon/Moira sepcifically that this drive exists or is larger than it is to alleviate suspicion.

Overwatch speculation that’s really more ‘i wonder if blizzard will release more lore for the rest of the year’ than anything else.

I still really want to see some follow up/what happened next to retribution, I think it’s…reasonably likely with some wishful thinking we might get something at the end of the event/close to that that’s either:

Mccree continuing his ‘thats where it all started to go wrong’ narration from the end of the event talking about how it kept going wrong/why he left and why he stuck around after Venice (cause if they play what Gabriel’s doing straight Jesse stuck around a good long time out of hope/loyalty before he couldn’t take it anymore) and, probably guven the format of the latest shorts, whether he’s going to answer the recall and come back. And this would be a logical place to put this and continue their ‘answering recall’ shorts.

Or

The debrief dialogue from the trailer/teasers is from something larger and wasn’t only recorded for promotional stuff. If it’s this (and I almost think that’s more likely cause we may have already seen stuff that clues us in to it existing) I would think it would have some sort of ‘reveal’ in it that somewhat explain why although blackwatch goes under investigation (cause that ship has sailed) Gabriel seems to obtain some personal forgiveness and remain on good terms/technically operating blackwatch even though they are “suspended” by the time of uprising.

To my mind that’s either likely to be: figured out Moira is a spy and did the only thing he could to get them all out without her realising he’d sussed her (as laid out in @segadores-y-soldados great post here). Or. ‘moiras been helping me with this genetic stuff and I think a side effect is the urge to murder people’. I’m interested to see what they do over the event (I could see us getting a small debrief file off genji and Moira at the week/2 week mark if they were leading up to this)

Obvious third option: no more lore until next year’s archives event.

Things from the retribution voice lines datamining I really hope go together:

Moira: and here I thought we were supposed to be the quiet ones, next thing you know we’ll have Lieutenant Wilhelm on the team

McCree: We could use a tank

Reyes: I’m never going to hear the end of this am I?

McCree: I’m sure I’ll get over it eventually

Reyes: Good cause I’m going to need you, Jesse.
