The girl in the leopard print

That’s Faye Schulman! She’s known for her work photographing the Jewish resistance movement in eastern Europe – and, of course, her fabulous coat. As of July ‘17, she’s still alive! Check these out:

Bloody iconic, mate.

A quote from her is:

“Jewish people didn’t go like sheep to the slaughter … I was a photographer. I have pictures. I have proof.”

She’s also written a memoir. I think theres a book collecting photos of hers as well? But I think it’s harder to get hold of.

She frequently had to hide that she was Jewish from other partisans she worked with out of fear of what they might do (there’s a story about her only eating potatoes during Passover and just never explaining why).

She could only take a small number of the negatives she had to the displaced person camp she was in after the end of the war and had to abandon the rest.

It is fairly clear why the three north London seats with the highest percentage Jewish population in the country while having a swing to labour did not swing as much as other very similar marginals particularly elsewhere in the capital and have therefore remained conservative (just).

This is the product of a large number of people in those constituencies having well founded concerns that antisemitism would get worse/more overt/more mainstream/etc under a labour government particularly with the current leadership. Or were worried that more votes for labour was a legitimisation of everything up until this point etc.

It seems fair to say that had that not been the case, particularly given how close it came in all three seats (seriously one is within 300 votes), those seats may have also flipped to labour.

Had the conservatives lost those three seats a Tory+DUP agreement would not have been enough to form a majority.

Germany remembers the victims, has zero statues of the perpetrators of evil.

The South glorifies the losing evil side, viciously villifies the victims.

can we stop acting like germany is perfect and ashamed and never racist any more

This also isn’t really true…

A) The allies destroyed a lot of stuff to prevent it being used as shrines to the Nazis – so not having these things isn’t exactly a choice Germany has made cause they regret stuff anyway.

B) there are absolutely still Nazi statues in Germany…most (but not all) of them have had the swatzikas knocked off but that isn’t the same as not having the statues at all. The ones that are all over the shop are the eagles and there’s also stuff like the statues of the Aryan ideal still at the Olympic Stadium (or were until very recently). I’m pretty sure there’s another Olympics themed statue in Hanover that’s doing a Nazi salute that’s still there etc. So monuments built to the Nazis maybe not but they have kept those built by the Nazis.

This is the third time I’ve seen this today and I LOVE IT! This this this!.

The dude behind this just posted an update (on twitter and maybe other places I dunno) and it’s still great!

And with the above mentioned update:

Reblogging. I love this guy. And he is from my hometown. Hamburg citizens rule! (Obviously, we do not call ourselves “Hamburgers”)

It doesn’t matter whether it’s ‘not literal’ or ‘for effect’ or done with a fucking hashtag this comparison still trivialises the deaths of millions of people due to genocide.

It is not your place to make this comparison if you are not Jewish or Romani.

Hitler and the holocaust are not an abstract concept.

Stop doing it.

Queer Coding Male Animated Villains by The Princess and The Scrivener

Female villains are usually cold and powerful, regal and impressive. But male villains, how often are they flirtatious or predatory? Manipulative, physically weak, and easily frightened? How often are they sassy, or thin, or well-dressed?

These aren’t a smattering of random characteristics, these kinds of traits are grouped together pretty frequently in the form of what’s known as the “sissy archetype.” A “sissy” is defined as a person who is effeminate or cowardly, usually used to insult men by saying they have feminine qualities. TV Tropes refers to this as the “Camp Gay” trope.

Now there’s nothing wrong with being an effeminate, fashion-loving gay man. But when it’s the predominant representation of the queer community, it leads to negative and restrictive stereotypes of an extremely diverse community. And to take it one step further, the problem is even worse when this kind of character only appears in children’s media as the villain.

Subscribe to The Princess and the Scrivener for weekly videos on Disney, intersectional feminism, pop culture critiques, and more!

Yeah okay…all of these are also examples of Jewish coding, effeminate/cowardly/manipulative/physically weak/etc all the things pointed to in this post are all stereotypes about Jewish men and are all things used to code characters as Jewish. And, they have been for a long long time – associating something you wanted to be seen as negative with Jews is a tactic people have been doing for centuries and it results in people coding characters as Jewish in order to have people have a negative response to them, including homosexuality (there’s a reason the ‘sins’ of sodomy and ursary were historically considered linked by the church its because they associated both of them with us) and including, very much so, gender nonconformity, amoung a lot of other things.

This also happens with female villains, Mother Gothel is a very very clear example of Jewish coding in a female villain. She has very stereotypically Jewish appearance and traits and she experiences the same gender nonconforming coding as a lot of male villain examples given.

It doesn’t have to be deliberate, coding (any kind of coding) often isn’t but it’s still there, and in this case of talking about coding missing the massive overarching example is a big oversight (particularly if you think Mother Gothel isn’t an example of negative coding, somehow)

fyi a koffing is poison type

of all places …

I’m not sure if it’s real or not, but I saw a picture of somebody trying to catch a rat-looking Pokémon in front of Auschwitz, which…yeah, I really hope that’s not real.

ETA: Some of this might be false reporting; the museums apparently have asked not to be included, but the above claim in the article is apparently likely not true.

I don’t doubt you, but is there a source?

Again, I’m hoping it was just a hoax, but this is link: http://nymag.com/selectall/2016/07/yes-you-can-catch-pokemon-at-auschwitz.html

As far as I know the museum has an issue with being a pokestop (someone put a lure on the pokestop yesterday I believe) and with people going there to play the game/playing the game while there regardless of what exact Pokemon they are catching, which is fair. Also seen similar ‘maybe not appropriate’ comments about the 9/11 memorial though unlike the holocaust museum I don’t think that’s a specific in game location just somewhere pokemon can be.

I’m not totally sure how the system to generate Pokemon in places works but even if koffing specifically in a hoax there re legit pictures if people catching Pokemon in the museum and the image even of fake raises the possibility that that Pokemon could appear there.

I was also wondering about the camps, we cant get the game legitimately yet in Europe (people do have it, but I imagine this might come up again when more people do) but that article does mention they had issues with this kind of location with ingres so hopefully they have thought to put in some sort of controls in this time (but currently its not looking like it unfortunately – when I last looked the company hadn’t responded to the museum’s request to not be a location for the game and I haven’t seen any response from them this morning but they may have dine by now?).

The specific question me and my housemate were wondering last night was whether you could catch ghost Pokemon at night at locations like Auschwitz, the 9/11 memorial, etc (and then I suppose more specifically is it possible poison gas Pokemon would generate at Auschwitz or the holocaust museum even if that hasn’t come up yet) cause its a significant oversight on someone’s part if you can and just maybe those kinds of locations should be black spots for the app just in general

It
would be good if Jewish created media was able to explore Nazism, a
massive force in shaping Jewish life and experience, without the
guarantee that other people would romanticize, get off on or excuse
the subjects of that exploration.
