Nonbinary UK notes

lottelodge:

I wrote this quick little blurb for someone for a private message, and I thought it might come in handy for other people (all personal info removed).

Some things that might be useful to know, if you’re dipping a toe into the waters of UK and NHS trans* issues:

  • The NHS guidelines state that they should use your preferred pronouns regardless of surgery and hormones or lack thereof. This includes singular “they” and other nonbinary pronouns. Feel free to tell the doctors this when you tell them about your pronouns with new visits, and mention any loopholes you’re okay with such as just using your name repeatedly to avoid pronouns altogether. If they keep misgendering you, you can officially complain.
  • The NHS are also in the process of updating systems to include Mx. As you can imagine, this is taking a very long time!
  • If you’re experiencing gender dysphoria, they can’t just turn you away; you are entitled to care and can insist on it.
  • I am an openly nonbinary person being treated by the NHS, and I know I’m not the only one. I’m attending the London Charring Cross clinic. Just in case you are too, Dr James Barrett has some seriously disturbing ideas about nonbinary people, but Dr Lorimer is excellent.
  • Nonbinary.org is a good place to start. There’s the forums, plus a wiki and a blog. The wiki is excellent; you can find companies and banks and such and check out whether or not they’ll use Mx for you.
  • I did this PDF, which is really good for complaining when people won’t put Mx on your records.

Nottingham university has an Mx option as well, which you can change to at any time.
Titles in the uk have no legal standing so you can use whatever you like providing it doesn’t imply a qualification or position you don’t have, and you don’t need a deadpoll to change.
