The Maximoff retcon wasn’t Whedon’s choice. Rights to the Marvel characters are tied up between different studios, Pietro & Wanda belong partially to the Avengers (where they first appeared) and partly to the X-Men where they were given an origin. Since Magneto, mutants, and other things CAN’T be mentioned in the Avengers films they had to have a new origin. The versions of them in the new X-Men movie should have the background we all know. Whedon had no choice because of that.
