So at-heart-a-gentleman asked for a few photos featuring the back of Combeferre’s waistcoat from the 2012 film. I knew I had a few shots in my files from when I made one about a year ago and went to dig them up. I very soon remembered the problem I faced: no good clear shots thanks to Tom Hooper’s penchant for dutch angles. I therefore want to break this down in the hopes we can get to the bottom of this mystery – what exactly does Combeferre’s waistcoat look like in the back?
What we know is that there is a band at the side which tightens the waistcoat to fit properly. What we don’t know is what this band does in the centre. Given we have this shot of Grantaire’s waistcoat from the building of the barricade scene:
From this inference, we can figure out they are quite possibly similar in design. The bands wrap around the back and tie together cinching the waistcoat in a corset-like effect making sure fit is as close as possible.
Hopefully this helps and you are not left up a creek without a paddle so to speak. With so many details in this film and so few good angles of everything it can be frustrating trying to find something which was made for the film but never made it actually onto the screen…. I have definitely been there myself so many times.
All the best of luck and if you need anything else feel free to give me a shout!
