What I think a lot of cis people don’t get about being trans or non-binary is that it is extremely exhausting to be around people. Going out in public and being misgendered by every single person who interacts with you is so mentally trying that it actually wears down on your mental health.

And often you’ll get encouraged to just go out and “be yourself,” as though being transgender is the same as wearing odd socks or liking a really obscure television show.

Being transgender is an every day struggle and it doesn’t stop being a struggle, especially for those who have intense dysphoria, because being misgendered is like being physically struck every time someone addresses you by the wrong name or pronouns. It’s not “oh you don’t like my socks” or “you don’t like that tv show either” it’s “oh, that’s right, you don’t perceive me as who i actually am.”

And hell, be proud of trans kids who are proud of their bodies. Be proud of boys who don’t wear binders and girl who grow facial hair. Be proud that they are proud, but don’t disregard their feelings when it comes to be in public or tell them that “everyone gets anxiety,” because it is so much more than that.
