someone informed me that while “person of color” is an american term, there are (often derogatory) words in different european languages that would denote someone of darker skin.
does anyone know if there’s a french word for dark italians/dark-skinned people/dark-skinned immigrants?
(this is coming from knowing other romance languages then googling likely equivilants in very basic french but might help?)
metis is for mixed race people (I think the -se ending is feminine? but i might be wrong) its not automatically offensive but deffinitly can be depending on how its used (negre is always offensive though I think)
also maybe morisque which is the french equivlent of the spanish morisco literally moorish so more commonly used for arabs or mena people in general, but I have this have wider use in spanish unlike other terms that are more for specific ethnicities
comparisons to animals are fairly common ways to be racist particularly using certain words and certain animals (clebard/cabot which means dog or mutt literally and i’m fairly sure is racial in french, and macaque – which is a particular type of monkey, football fans yell this one)
for canon era stuff in particular words for heathen or heratic would be used as well (or other insinuations that people weren’t ‘pure-blooded christians’ because racism and excuses for being racist have existed longer than the concept of race/ethnicity being a thing and that’s still around in the 1600s deffinitly)
none of that would really be applied to d’artagnan though except possibly through mistake because he’d be the same ethnicity as people its coming from (although in canon era time you can probably use gascon as a pejoritive) he may possibly be described as basané which apparently roughly translates to swarthy (or tanned)
words for immigrants in general might work?
